Raymond Renaud, Buchenwald Survivor and Weimar Honorary Citizen, Dies at 102

Thuringian leaders hailed his long commitment to educating young people about Nazi crimes.

  • Thuringia’s State Chancellery and state parliament confirmed he died on January 14 at the age of 102.
  • He was imprisoned at Buchenwald from September 1943 until the camp’s liberation by U.S. forces on April 11, 1945.
  • Arrested in August 1942 for transporting and distributing leaflets, he was sentenced to 13 months and later deported as prisoner number 21,448.
  • He spent more than two decades sharing testimony with students and regularly visiting Weimar, most recently for the 80th‑anniversary commemorations last April.
  • Weimar named him an honorary citizen in 2022 and he was a Knight of the French Légion d'honneur, with reports differing on whether he was born on July 13 or July 15, 1923.
