Rawalpindi Launches First Electric Bus Network With Immediate Expansion to 80 Announced

The rollout advances Punjab's plan for 1,100 green buses by December.

  • Forty-five e-buses are now operating on four routes covering Raja Bazaar–Koral Chowk, Saddar–Adiala Road/Munawar Colony, Saddar–Qabristan Chowk, and Marrir Chowk–26 Number Chungi.
  • Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the service and said Rawalpindi’s allocation will rise to 80 buses, with 145 for the Potohar division including 15 each for Jhelum, Chakwal and Attock.
  • The fare is set at Rs20, with free travel for women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students.
  • The fleet features air conditioning, free Wi‑Fi, charging ports, CCTV, wheelchair space and a separate women’s compartment, while officials said charging stations are ready at Saddar’s Old Waran terminal and Chohar Chowk’s Green Bus Terminal.
  • Officials detailed a parallel Rs30 billion, 25‑km signal‑free corridor from Koral Chowk to Motorway Chowk targeted for next year, initial daily ridership of about 24,000, and ongoing depot work on Peshawar Road.
