Raskin Demands Trump Return $7.8M in Foreign Funds
Former president has yet to respond to the demand, which is based on a report finding his businesses received the money from foreign governments during his presidency.
- Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, is demanding that former President Donald Trump return roughly $7.8 million, following a report released by Democrats last week that found his businesses accepted at least that amount from foreign governments during his time in office.
- Raskin has accused Trump of trying to 'convert the presidency into a moneymaking enterprise' and has yet to hear a response to his request for the return of the funds.
- Trump, during a Fox News town-hall event, did not deny the accuracy of the Democrats’ findings, instead arguing that he provided services in exchange for the money.
- Raskin's demand is based on the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits the president or any other federal official from accepting a present, payment, office or title of any kind from a foreign government without the consent of Congress.
- China was the leading spender, paying more than $5.5 million to Trump-owned properties.
