Rashod Newton Sentenced to 35 Years for Murder of Alessia Mesquita

The tragic case, marked by domestic abuse and a fatal shooting, was recently featured in an episode of American Monster.

• Alessia Mesquita, a mother of two, was shot to death by her boyfriend, Rashod Newton, in broad daylight on March 22, 2021, during a heated argument in their car.
• Mesquita had been a victim of domestic abuse throughout her relationship with Newton, who had a history of narcotics and assault charges.
• Following the murder, Newton fled the scene with their one-year-old daughter in the car, but was later arrested and charged with murder, risk of injury to a minor, and criminal possession of a firearm.
• Newton pleaded guilty to his charges in December 2022 and was sentenced to 35 years in prison on January 26, 2023. He is currently incarcerated at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution.
