Rare White Leucistic Alligator Born at Gatorland in Orlando

The female alligator, one of only eight known in the world, is the first of its kind to be born in captivity.

  • An extremely rare white leucistic alligator has been born at Gatorland in Orlando, Florida, one of only eight known in the world.
  • The female alligator is the first of its kind to be born in captivity and is descended from a nest of leucistic alligators found in Louisiana in 1987.
  • Leucistic alligators, the rarest genetic variation of the American alligator, differ from albino alligators as they have blue eyes and often have patches of normal coloration on their skin.
  • Due to their lack of darker skin pigmentation, leucistic alligators cannot be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods as they sunburn easily.
  • Gatorland is asking the public for help in naming the alligator and her normal-colored brother, and plans to put them on display early next year.
