Overview
- An extremely rare white leucistic alligator has been born at Gatorland in Orlando, Florida, one of only eight known in the world.
- The female alligator is the first of its kind to be born in captivity and is descended from a nest of leucistic alligators found in Louisiana in 1987.
- Leucistic alligators, the rarest genetic variation of the American alligator, differ from albino alligators as they have blue eyes and often have patches of normal coloration on their skin.
- Due to their lack of darker skin pigmentation, leucistic alligators cannot be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods as they sunburn easily.
- Gatorland is asking the public for help in naming the alligator and her normal-colored brother, and plans to put them on display early next year.
