Rare Supermoon Blue Moon to Illuminate August Skies
The Sturgeon Moon, also known by various cultural names, will be the first of four consecutive supermoons this year.
- The full moon on August 19, 2024, will be a supermoon and a blue moon, appearing larger and brighter than usual.
- This astronomical event is called the Sturgeon Moon, named by Native American tribes for the abundance of sturgeon fish during this time.
- The moon will reach its fullest point at 2:26 PM ET, but will be best viewed at moonrise or moonset due to an optical illusion.
- Viewers in the U.S. can see the supermoon rise at about 8 PM local time on the East Coast, weather permitting.
- The next three full moons in September, October, and November will also be supermoons, creating a rare sequence.
