Overview
- Aemet has placed Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, the southern half of Gran Canaria and parts of Tenerife under red warnings from August 10 for daytime highs of 40°C and nighttime minima above 30°C.
- The other islands carry amber warnings with expected highs around 38°C as the peak of the heatwave approaches between August 9 and 11.
- Forecasters warn that the heatwave will extend across the Canary Islands and mainland Spain until at least August 13.
- The Canary Islands Ministry of Health has issued corresponding red and amber health alerts urging people to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun, seek cool indoor spaces and limit outdoor exertion.
- Sustained drought, Saharan calima dust and elevated wildfire risk under the INFOCA plan have strained emergency services ahead of the current heatwave.
