Rare Lunar Occultation of Saturn Visible Tonight

The blue supermoon will pass in front of Saturn, creating a celestial spectacle visible across parts of the world.

  • The event will be visible overnight from August 20 to 21, with Saturn emerging from behind the moon around 12:38 a.m. local time.
  • Best viewing conditions require a telescope or high-powered binoculars to see Saturn's rings and moons.
  • North America, Australia, and Asia will see the moon and Saturn close together, while parts of South America, Africa, and Europe will witness the occultation.
  • A free livestream of the event will be available from the Virtual Telescope Project starting at 11:00 p.m. ET.
  • The moon and Saturn will rise in the southeastern sky and set in the southwestern sky, reaching their highest point between 2 and 3 a.m. local time.
