Pennington's victory marked her sixth consecutive win and she is now the third Colorado-born fighter to win a UFC championship.
Following her win, Pennington called out Julianna Pena, the former UFC women's bantamweight champion, for a fight that has been in the making for 13 years.
Pena, who did not compete in 2023, is back to training at full capacity and is targeting a return in either the first week of June or the third week of July.
Despite her inactivity, Pena is currently listed as the No.1 contender in the women's bantamweight division and is the consensus challenger to Pennington's newly acquired title.
