Authorities urge precautions as severe weather with dangerous cold threatens several regions.

Overview

  • Argentina’s national meteorological service issued yellow alerts for Saturday across Buenos Aires (center and south), San Luis, Mendoza, Córdoba, San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy, warning of intense lightning, hail, heavy short‑period rain of 20–50 mm and wind gusts up to 75 km/h.
  • Earlier Friday guidance kept orange alerts for severe storms in parts of Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe, La Rioja, Catamarca and Corrientes, with hazards including frequent lightning, hail, gusts potentially above 90 km/h and 60–90 mm of rain.
  • Buenos Aires’ metropolitan area cooled after Thursday’s storms, with no heat advisories posted for Friday and no atypical conditions forecast locally for Saturday.
  • In Córdoba, city and provincial advisories flag a high probability of isolated but locally strong storms on Saturday, with possible hail, abundant rain in short bursts and southerly gusts near 59 km/h.
  • Mexico’s Cold Front No. 29 and its polar air mass are bringing a cold to frigid weekend, including subzero dawn readings in the north, a Norte with gusts up to 80 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, possible mountain snow on high peaks, and Nuevo León’s Operativo Carrusel to provide hot drinks, blankets and shelter transfers.
