Rapid Monsoon Advance Triggers Red Alerts and Disruptions Across India

The rain has brought relief from heatwave conditions, prompting flight diversions, waterlogging, IMD safety advisories in several states.

Overview

  • The southwest monsoon arrived 17 days early in Kerala and 14 days early in Mumbai and has now covered Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Uttar Pradesh as of June 17.
  • The IMD has issued red alerts for districts in Gujarat, Kerala and northern India and orange to yellow warnings for Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi-NCR.
  • Heavy rainfall and strong winds have disrupted flight and train operations, with at least 12 flights diverted in Delhi and airlines in Mumbai warning of delays amid waterlogged roads and low visibility.
  • Two low-pressure systems over south Gujarat and Bangladesh are expected to sustain very heavy rains, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several states through June 19.
  • Widespread showers have eased heatwave conditions, bringing maximum temperatures down from above 40 °C to near-normal levels in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
