Rangers' Marcus Semien Out 4–6 Weeks With Foot Fracture, Lisfranc Sprain

The absence dents Texas' playoff odds.

Overview

  • Manager Bruce Bochy said the recovery timetable is four to six weeks, which likely ends Semien’s regular season unless Texas advances in October.
  • Semien fouled a pitch off his left foot on Aug. 21 in Kansas City; after inconclusive X-ray, MRI and CT scans, a specialist confirmed a third metatarsal fracture and a Lisfranc sprain.
  • Semien said surgery is not expected at this time, noting the Lisfranc ligament is the key concern and requires rest to avoid a more severe tear.
  • Texas is around .500 and 4.5 games back of the final AL wild card, with FanGraphs’ ZiPS cutting the club’s playoff odds from about 12.8% to 9.1% without Semien.
  • Ezequiel Duran is projected to take most second-base reps, with Josh Jung and Cody Freeman among internal options for added playing time as the club adjusts.
  • The injury interrupts one of MLB’s most durable runs, as Semien had missed only six Rangers games since 2022 and had not been on the IL since 2017.
