Rancho Cucamonga Vigil Honors Slain Deputy as Suspect Remains Hospitalized After Freeway Chase

Prosecutors now weigh murder-of-a-peace-officer charges for Angelo Jose Saldivar pending his medical clearance.

Overview

  • Hundreds gathered outside the Rancho Cucamonga Civic Center on Wednesday night to remember Deputy Andrew Nunez, with wreaths from law enforcement agencies and tributes from city leaders.
  • Nunez, 28, a six-year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, was shot in the head while responding to a domestic-violence call at a condominium on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive.
  • The suspect, identified as 47-year-old San Bernardino resident Angelo Jose Saldivar, allegedly opened fire on arriving deputies, then fled on a motorcycle before crashing on the 210 Freeway near Upland.
  • Sheriff Shannon Dicus said an off-duty narcotics deputy executed a “legal intervention” by striking the motorcycle shortly before the crash, after which Saldivar was taken into custody in stable condition.
  • The sheriff’s department says Saldivar will be booked for murder once medically cleared, as flags fly at half-staff statewide and a police association donation page supports Nunez’s wife and young daughter.
