Overview
- President Cyril Ramaphosa has departed for New York to lead South Africa’s delegation to the 80th UN General Assembly High-Level Week from 23–29 September.
- He is scheduled to deliver South Africa’s General Debate address on Tuesday, 23 September, with a focus on multilateralism, peaceful conflict resolution and human rights.
- Ramaphosa will join a two-state solution conference on Monday as Britain, Australia and Canada move to recognise a Palestinian state, with additional engagements set with African leaders.
- South Africa says it will press for UN Security Council reform, highlight the burdens on developing countries and urge stronger cooperation to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
- The itinerary includes the Biennial Summit for a sustainable and resilient global economy, a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, investor and trade discussions, and participation by ministers including Ronald Lamola, Parks Tau and Aaron Motsoaledi.
