Raleigh Man Charged in Alleged Blood Attack on UNC Rex Staff That Exposed Two to HIV

Police attribute the six-month gap before his arrest to his receiving medical and psychiatric treatment.

Overview

  • Kameron Gilchrist, 25, faces two Class H felony counts of assault or affray causing physical injury to emergency room personnel, according to an arrest warrant.
  • The March 21 incident at UNC Rex Hospital allegedly occurred while Gilchrist was receiving treatment, and the warrant cites eye irritation and exposure to HIV for both employees.
  • Public records do not state whether the blood was Gilchrist’s or whether either employee contracted HIV.
  • Gilchrist was arrested on Sept. 11, is being held at the Wake County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond, has not entered a plea, and is due in court on Dec. 8.
  • If convicted, each count carries a potential sentence of up to 39 months in prison, and UNC Rex says it prioritizes employee safety as violence against health workers becomes more common.
