Rakesh Aggarwal Named NIA Director General With Tenure Through 2028

The decision follows the Appointments Committee’s repatriation of S. V. Date to his Maharashtra cadre.

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Aggarwal’s elevation to NIA Director General, with tenure until August 31, 2028, according to a Personnel Ministry order.
  • Aggarwal had been holding additional charge as interim chief since December after S. V. Date was sent back to Maharashtra.
  • He previously served as NIA special director general following a September 2025 in-situ upgrade from additional director general.
  • A 1994-batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Aggarwal is credited with expertise in counter-terror investigations, terror financing and radicalisation, and has CBI experience.
  • The same round of orders appointed Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor as ITBP chief and named Praveen Kumar the new BSF director general.
