Overview
- On July 21, Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu formally urged the Union government during the Monsoon Session to posthumously confer the Bharat Ratna on Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh and Madan Lal Dhingra.
- The appeal highlighted that none of the three revolutionaries—who respectively defied colonial rule through Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom at 23, Udham Singh’s assassination of General O’Dwyer, and Dhingra’s killing of Curzon Wyllie in 1909—have received the award in 77 years of independence.
- Sandhu argued the move reflects both Punjab’s long-standing public sentiment and a nationwide moral imperative to honor figures whose sacrifices continue to inspire India’s youth.
- He positioned the proposal within the Modi government’s stated commitment to honoring national heroes irrespective of caste, creed or socio-economic background.
- As of now, the Union government has not responded to the formal request, leaving the martyrs’ recognition pending at the start of the Monsoon Session.
