Rajnath Singh’s First-Ever Morocco Visit to Open Tata Defence Plant, India’s First in Africa

The trip is expected to launch a defence cooperation framework that signals a deeper industrial push under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Overview

  • India’s defence minister will travel to Morocco on September 22–23 at the invitation of Abdellatif Loudiyi, marking the first visit of its kind.
  • The visit includes inaugurating Tata Advanced Systems Maroc’s WhAP 8×8 facility in Berrechid, described by the MoD as the first Indian defence manufacturing plant in Africa.
  • Both sides are expected to sign a defence cooperation MoU during the trip, creating an institutional basis for exchanges, training and industrial linkages.
  • The planned agreement is intended to strengthen maritime collaboration, building on regular Indian Navy port calls at Casablanca.
  • Rajnath Singh will hold talks with Loudiyi, meet Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour on defence industrial ties, and engage with the Indian community in Rabat.
