Officials present the program as a way to build reading habits for better civic awareness.

  • An Education Department order sets a 10-minute morning assembly slot to read major national, international and sports news, including editorials.
  • Students from classes 6–12 will read aloud, with those assigned asked to arrive 30 minutes early to prepare.
  • Five new vocabulary words with meanings must be introduced every day.
  • Schools must subscribe to specified newspapers: senior secondary at least two (one English, one Hindi), upper primary two Hindi, and English-medium at least one English and one Hindi.
  • Guidelines also require reading one English and one Hindi national-level newspaper in assembly and call for 'No Bag Day' group discussions on current events and government activities.
