Overview

  • At least nine deaths were reported by multiple outlets, including five in a landslide on the Vaishno Devi route at Adhkwari and four in Doda, with officials cautioning that counts are still being updated.
  • IMD issued a red alert for several Jammu districts and nearby regions with warnings of very heavy rain, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides through August 27.
  • Traffic on the JammuSrinagar highway was suspended after landslides and falling rocks, other mountain roads were washed out or blocked, and Northern Railway cancelled multiple trains including the Katra–New Delhi Vande Bharat.
  • Rivers and barrages swelled past danger levels, with the Tawi crossing the 20‑foot mark in Udhampur, the Chenab near warning levels, the Basanter rising, and the Madhopur barrage in Kathua overflowing above one lakh cusecs.
  • Rescue and relief operations by SDRF, police, Army and civil authorities continued as schools were closed, exams postponed, helplines issued, mobile service outages were reported, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah directed funds and high alert across districts.
