Rain and Storms Bring Brief Reprieve to B.C. Wildfire Hotspots

Showers over much of southern B.C. are easing wildfire spread ahead of a forecast midweek drying trend.

Overview

  • British Columbia’s wildfire service reports unsettled conditions with rain dampening key fire-prone areas across the province.
  • Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm bulletins for the southern Interior and northeast, including Fort Nelson, the Peace River area and parts of the Okanagan.
  • A cold front moved into northeastern B.C. on Sunday, delivering gusty winds and precipitation that bolstered moisture levels.
  • Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to persist into early week before a drying pattern takes hold around Wednesday or Thursday.
  • There are just over 70 active wildfires in B.C., with fewer than 10 out of control and most blazes clustered in northeastern regions, Vancouver Island and the southern Interior.
