Railways Sets 2030 Plan to Double Originating Train Capacity in 48 Cities

Zonal Railways have been directed to submit time-bound proposals to the Planning Directorate.

Overview

  • Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar instructed general managers to file specific plans with clear timelines and defined outcomes.
  • Capacity will rise progressively over the next five years to deliver benefits before the 2030 target.
  • Works include adding platforms, stabling lines and pit lines at existing terminals, alongside new urban terminals and mega coaching complexes.
  • Network upgrades will raise sectional capacity through signalling improvements, multitracking and other traffic facility works, addressing constraints in stations and yards.
  • Planning extends to nearby stations to balance traffic, with Pune’s cluster of Hadapsar, Khadki and Alandi cited as an example.
