Railways Sets 2030 Goal to Double Originating Trains in 48 Cities

Zones have been ordered to submit city-wise timelines to deliver capacity increases in phases.

Overview

  • Railway Board chief Satish Kumar directed zonal railways to file specific, time-bound proposals for each city with defined outcomes to the Planning Directorate.
  • Works will expand existing terminals with additional platforms, stabling lines and pit lines, create new terminals, and add maintenance capacity through mega coaching complexes.
  • Sectional capacity will be raised via signalling upgrades, multitracking and other traffic facility works to handle higher train volumes.
  • Capacity gains are slated to roll out progressively over five years, with projects grouped as immediate, short-term and long-term for both suburban and non-suburban operations.
  • Planning will balance loads across nearby stations, illustrated by Pune’s inclusion of Hadapsar, Khadki and Alandi, while Western Railway outlined new lines and termini in the Mumbai region expected to enable more long-distance and suburban services.
