Overview
- The Railway Board has approved ₹309.26 crore to install Kavach on 14 key rail sections in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, including the 102 km Birlanagar–Udimorh stretch.
- Installation funding also covers more than 790 route kilometres in the North Central Railway zone under a ₹27,693 crore signalling and communication upgrade scheme.
- Western Railway has begun fitting its 110 EMUs on the Churchgate–Virar–Dahanu corridor with Kavach, targeting full coverage by late 2026.
- Commissioning of Kavach on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route is slated for March 2026, extending the system from suburban services to major trunk routes.
- Kavach is a SIL4-certified Automatic Train Protection system developed under the Make in India initiative, leveraging optical-fibre and LTE backbones and backed by training for over 30,000 railway personnel.
