Railways Reports Record-Low 11 Consequential Train Accidents This Fiscal Through November

The minister credited sustained investment with technology upgrades as the driver of the improvement.

Overview

  • Accidents per million train kilometres declined to 0.03 in 2024–25 from 0.11 in 2014–15, reflecting about a 73% improvement.
  • Safety outlay nearly tripled over a decade to Rs 1,16,470 crore in 2025–26 from Rs 39,463 crore in 2013–14, enabling large-scale upgrades.
  • Electronic interlocking now covers 6,656 stations, level-crossing interlocking spans 10,098 gates, and complete track circuiting is in place at 6,661 stations as of October 31, 2025.
  • Kavach version 4.0 is commissioned on stretches of the DelhiMumbai and DelhiHowrah corridors, with rollout under way across 15,512 route-km on key national routes.
  • Asset maintenance has intensified, with nearly 50,000 track-km renewed in the past decade, ultrasonic weld testing more than doubled, weld failures down ~90% and rail fractures down over 88%.
