Railways Misses Second Kavach Deadline on DelhiMumbai and DelhiHowrah, Sets 2026 Target

Supplier bottlenecks plus integration complexity push the operational target to 2026.

Overview

  • The December 2025 goal for full installation on the two high‑density corridors slipped after an initial March 2025 target was extended earlier this year.
  • Officials say about 25% of work on these routes has been commissioned and is ready to use, with major components already installed across most remaining sections.
  • Kavach 4.0 is commissioned on 738 route km, including PalwalMathura–Nagda (633 km) on the DelhiMumbai corridor and Howrah–Bardhaman (105 km) on the DelhiHowrah corridor.
  • Buildout to date includes 7,129 km of optical fibre, 800 telecom towers, Station Kavach at 860 stations, track‑side equipment on 5,672 route km, and onboard systems on 4,154 locomotives.
  • Track‑side implementation has been taken up on 15,512 route km, bids are invited to equip another 9,069 locomotives, and officials report the pool of approved installers has grown from three to more than five with many more needed.
