Raids Seize Hundreds of Kilos of Illegal Fireworks as Scotland’s Control Zones Take Effect

Authorities are intensifying checks before Bonfire Night, with fresh warnings on 50kg carriage limits and potential insurance gaps.

Overview

  • West Yorkshire Police, Trading Standards and Fire & Rescue carried out 20 visits, seizing over 350kg of fireworks worth more than £10,000 from suspected rogue sellers.
  • Northumbria Police and partners removed almost 20kg of unlicensed fireworks from a Newcastle home after reports of sales via social media.
  • Firework Control Zones are now active in Edinburgh and Glasgow, making it a criminal offence to set off fireworks in designated areas with penalties of up to a £5,000 fine and six months in prison, enforced by Police Scotland.
  • Drivers are reminded by HSE guidance that up to 50kg of certain retail fireworks can be carried for no more than 21 days without a licence, with breaches risking a £300 fine, six penalty points and possible insurance invalidation.
  • Fire services are inspecting licensed sellers through Nov. 10 and urge buying only CE or UKCA‑marked products, while national rules still bar use between 11pm and 7am except on specified dates and allow purchases from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10.
