Overview
- A Southern service from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed on Thursday when three carriages slid part-way down an embankment with about 150 people aboard and two passengers seriously injured.
- The Rail Accident Investigation Branch completed on-site evidence gathering on Saturday and formally handed the scene to Network Rail so engineers could start recovery work.
- Network Rail is preparing two 125-tonne rail-mounted cranes to lift the carriages in a location close to a river and inside a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which limits road access and requires ecology-sensitive procedures.
- The Lewes–Haywards Heath line will stay closed for at least ten days with rail replacement buses operating between Lewes and Haywards Heath, passengers advised to travel via Brighton, and tickets accepted on alternative operators.
- Investigations into the cause continue and a second derailment near Wickford has focused attention on this summer's extreme heat as a possible factor, although no causal link has yet been established.
