Overview
- India had invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for a bilateral visit and BRICS outreach but plans for a trip scheduled for August 21–22 were called off and now have an uncertain date.
- Dhaka linked any visit to progress on the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina after her virtual media appearance from New Delhi on August 5 that Bangladesh said harmed the visit’s atmosphere.
- New Delhi says Hasina’s extradition request is being examined under applicable legal procedures while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said ties must meet the “test of mutual interest.”
- The stalled visit puts cooperation on the Ganges/Teesta river talks, planned economic zones at Mongla and Mirsharai, and energy and connectivity projects at risk because many of these issues are time-sensitive.
- The dispute reflects a wider Dhaka shift to a ‘Bangladesh First’ posture that stresses sovereign equality and diversifying partners, and it forces New Delhi to weigh legal process, domestic optics and regional strategy.
