Overview
- The Labour Ministry has pre-published the draft Code on Social Security (Central) Rules, 2025 to extend defined benefits to gig and platform workers.
- AAP MP Raghav Chadha called the move a small but important win and congratulated delivery partners while criticizing platforms such as Zomato, Swiggy and Blinkit for not engaging with workers’ concerns.
- Eligibility proposed in the draft requires at least 90 days with one aggregator or 120 days across multiple aggregators in the last financial year to qualify for benefits.
- The Code on Social Security, 2020, now in force, provides legal definitions and enables measures including life and disability cover, accident insurance, health and maternity benefits and old-age protection.
- Administration would draw on the e-Shram database and UAN system, with a Social Security Fund and a National Social Security Board envisaged to support and oversee schemes.
