RAF Forms No. III Space Effects Squadron to Act Against Orbital Threats

It signals Britain will field electronic warfare, other tools to deter or disrupt hostile activity that targets satellites vital to defence and civilian services.

Overview

  • The RAF announced the creation of No. III Space Effects Squadron on Wednesday at the UK Space Power Conference, completing a trio that includes No. I Space Operations and No. II Space Warning squadrons.
  • The squadron’s mission is to disrupt, degrade and deny hostile activity in orbit to protect satellites that guide ships, power mobile communications and provide missile warning for the UK.
  • Officials say the unit will employ electronic warfare and other systems to support both offensive and defensive space operations and will scale as new capabilities enter service.
  • The formation is a direct step under the UK Space Strategy and is backed by targeted defence funding including an £880 million envelope for space ISR and space control between 2026/27 and 2029/30.
  • The government has ruled out destructive anti‑satellite missile tests and will press for international norms through the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space even as the build‑out raises questions about escalation and transparency.
