Radical Rift Deepens as Provincias Unidas Seeks to Bar Rival From Using 'UCR' Name in Lower House

A party executive meeting may weigh the complaint soon, with a majority aligned to Morales–LousteauPullaro seen as favorable to advancing a decision before February.

Overview

  • Six deputies from Provincias Unidas sent a formal letter to the UCR National Committee asking that the other six-member bloc be prohibited from using the party label in the Chamber of Deputies.
  • The request, signed by Mariela Coletta, Pablo Juliano, Martín Lousteau, Jorge Rizzotti and María Inés Zigarán, argues only those who follow party mandates should carry the UCR name.
  • The move cites the Budget 2025 vote in which, according to the letter, three members of the UCR bloc backed a chapter repealing university financing and a disability emergency law, two abstained and one voted against despite a stated party mandate.
  • Pamela Verasay, who leads the bloc currently using the UCR label, said she was surprised by the filing and recalled proposing a single caucus with freedom of action under a framework of unity.
  • The 15-member Mesa Nacional is expected to discuss the issue in an upcoming Zoom session and, given its makeup with only three members tied to Alfredo Cornejo, a ruling could emerge before the party’s February gathering that would determine who may appear under the UCR banner.
