Radia Pitches Ultra-Large ‘Windrunner’ Airlifter to Pentagon Review

The Colorado startup is promoting outsized cargo volume for moving intact systems as the U.S. Transportation Command studies the concept.

Overview

  • Radia released detailed specifications for the Windrunner, proposing an approximately 80‑meter wingspan, 109‑meter length and a cargo hold exceeding 6,800 cubic meters.
  • The company claims the aircraft could carry up to four fighter jets such as F‑16s or F‑35Cs or six CH‑47 Chinooks without disassembly.
  • Performance targets include a roughly 73‑ton payload, about 1,931 kilometers of range at maximum load and operations from unpaved runways around 1.83 kilometers long.
  • Radia says it is using off‑the‑shelf components to ease certification and is targeting service entry in 2030, though only renderings have been shown and no prototype has been confirmed.
  • U.S. Transportation Command has a research partnership with Radia, PitchBook reports about $130 million raised to date and the firm’s defense lead is retired USAF Maj. Gen. Kenneth Bibb.
