Racist, Xenophobic, and Antireligious Crimes in France Increased by 11% in 2024

A government report reveals over 16,000 recorded offenses last year, with Paris showing disproportionately high rates.

The French Ministry of the Interior reported a total of 16,335 racist, xenophobic, or antireligious infractions in 2024, including 9,350 crimes and 6,985 contraventions.
This marks an 11% increase in such crimes compared to 2023, following a 30% rise the previous year, resulting in a 44% increase over two years.
Most offenses involved public insults (52%), threats or blackmail (20%), and non-public insults accounted for nearly all contraventions (98%).
Paris recorded crime rates three to four times the national average, attributed partially to its high population density and tourism.
The report highlights that men, individuals aged 25 to 54, and African nationals were disproportionately represented among the 9,700 victims identified.
