- R. Vaishali and Vidit Gujrathi have made a historic win at the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament, thereby becoming the first sibling duo to qualify for the 2024 Candidates Tournament. The winners of the Candidates Tournament will get to play in the World Chess Championship against the current world champions.
- Vaishali won the Women's Grand Swiss title and secured a prize money of $25,000, by playing a draw with Mongolia's Batkhuyag Mungutuul in the final round of the competition. Her younger brother Praggnanandhaa and she have thus become the first brother-sister pair to qualify for their respective Candidates Tournaments.
- Vaishali is likely to become India's third female Grandmaster soon. On the day of the final round, she showed terrific performance but met with strong resistance from Mungutuul. However, in just 34 moves, the game was drawn, leading Vaishali to become the first Indian winner of the Grand Swiss Tournament.
- Meanwhile, in the open section of the tournament, Grandmaster Vidit showcased an exceptional performance, leading him to surpass Alexandr Predke with his strategic moves in the final round. He declared this win as 'the highlight of his career' and looks forward to topping it with a win at the FIDE Candidates.
- Vaishali's recent victory has placed her in a solid lead in the tournament, assuring her a spot among the top two. She is set to be one of the couple that qualified for the Candidates Tournament in Canada. This achievement brings her closer to her goal of becoming a Grandmaster, a title she has yearned for since childhood.
