Quintana Roo Debuts ESA-Backed Satellite Monitoring as Sargassum Response Scales Up

Expanded naval deployments, barrier operations, forecast-based alerts set the stage for directing seaweed toward removal, reuse

Overview

  • Quintana Roo opened a satellite-based sargassum monitoring center with the European Space Agency to forecast incoming blooms and inform cleanup operations.
  • The state and the Navy operate 11 coastal sargassum vessels, one transoceanic ship and 22 smaller boats, with four shallow-water vessels expected soon.
  • Authorities report more than 60,000 tonnes of sargassum removed in 2025, aided by nearly 9.5 kilometers of floating containment barriers.
  • Between August 9 and 14, the Secretaría de Marina-led task force collected about 300 tonnes of seaweed in Mahahual and Xcalak using 2,265 meters of barriers and 151 personnel.
  • Officials are advancing a Polo de Desarrollo de Economía Circular and private-sector trials to develop up to 140 products from harvested sargassum.
