Queiroz Fired as Qatar's Head Coach, Replaced by Marquez Lopez

Change in leadership comes a month before Qatar hosts the Asian Cup, amid concerns over Queiroz's defensive style of play.

  • Carlos Queiroz, former head coach of Qatar's national football team, has been fired a month before the country hosts the Asian Cup.
  • Queiroz, who was in charge for just 11 games, was appointed on a four-year contract in February after Felix Sanchez left the position.
  • No official reason was given for the decision, but there were local concerns over Queiroz's defensive style of play and his failure to bring young players from the country’s Aspire Academy into the senior roster.
  • Spanish coach Marquez Lopez has been hired as a replacement, leaving Qatar Stars League club Al-Wakrah to take over the national team.
  • Qatar is due to start a training camp in mid-December for the Asian Cup, where they will face Lebanon, Tajikistan and China in Group A.
