Queensland Police RAV4s Face New Payload Concerns After Overheating Warning

Toyota and police leaders say the hybrids’ protective interventions surfaced only in training.

Overview

  • An internal QPS weight guideline indicates a RAV4 Hybrid fitted with a protection screen leaves about 341kg of payload, dropping to roughly 101kg after accounting for two vested officers and standard gear.
  • Additional equipment such as stop sticks, a rifle kit, a fire extinguisher, and water can reduce remaining payload to about 75kg, raising questions about safely transporting detainees.
  • A previously leaked memo warned that the hybrid battery may overheat under hard braking with high acceleration and high RPMs during training, advising officers to pull over if warnings appear and noting possible limp-home mode.
  • Toyota says inspections found the vehicles are functioning as designed with protective interventions in extreme training scenarios, and QPS reports no such incidents during normal duties.
  • About 200 of 400 RAV4 Hybrids are already in service, the force plans to list payload figures in vehicles, and union officials are pressing for answers on safety and suitability.
