Queensland Faces Week of Heavy Rain and Possible Severe Storms

A Tasman Sea blocking high interacting with an inland trough is forcing onshore moisture into the state and keeping the wet pattern in place while forecasters weigh when it will end.

Overview

  • Several central‑west and coastal gauges set or neared October 24‑hour records over the weekend, including Tullinar (about 102mm), Muttaburra (101mm) and Sippy Downs (127mm).
  • The Bureau of Meteorology warns of possible severe thunderstorms with heavy bursts and damaging wind gusts in central and western Queensland, especially around Winton, Longreach and Windorah.
  • Forecasters say a southeast corridor from Gympie through Brisbane to the Gold Coast could receive 100–150mm by the weekend, which officials described as roughly a month’s rain falling in a week.
  • There are no active flood warnings, but rivers and creeks in some inland catchments have started to rise and the BoM cautions about rapid localised flash flooding and hazardous road conditions.
  • The BoM expects drier weather from about mid next week but stresses uncertainty because the Tasman Sea blocking high could stall a cold front and prolong or change the rainfall pattern, with showers possibly spreading to SA, VIC and NSW.
