Queens Teen Charged After Instagram Threat Leads to Loaded Gun Seized at Cardozo High School

An FBI tip tracing a geotagged Instagram threat enabled a rapid in-school arrest that recovered a loaded 9mm pistol.

Overview

  • Queens prosecutors said the 16-year-old was arraigned on multiple counts, including second-degree weapon possession and making a terroristic threat, with a court date set for Sept. 26.
  • NYPD added metal detectors and sustained police presence at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, with scanning to continue for the foreseeable future.
  • Police recovered a Taurus GX4 9mm pistol loaded with 13 rounds from the student’s backpack and later found additional 9mm bullets in his bedroom closet.
  • Officials said the firearm was legally purchased in South Carolina earlier this year, and the NYPDATF Joint Firearms Task Force is investigating how it reached the teen.
  • The post was made from inside the school around 10:17 a.m.; the FBI flagged the account at 11:33, officers verified the account by calling the linked number, obtained parental consent to search, and arrested the student without incident.
