Queen Letizia Revives Rare Cartier Pearl-and-Diamond Tiara for German State Banquet

Designed for Queen Victoria Eugenie in 1920, the heirloom made its first appearance since 2018.

Overview

  • On Nov. 26 at the Royal Palace in Madrid, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia hosted Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbender for a state dinner.
  • The Cartier Pearl and Diamond Tiara features eight pearls set within diamond scrollwork and was originally commissioned for Queen Victoria Eugenie, who once replaced the pearls with emeralds.
  • Queen Letizia had not worn the piece since April 2018 during Portugal’s state visit, and reporting notes no other royal has used it in that period.
  • She paired the tiara with a bespoke black Carolina Herrera gown with a square neckline and beaded short sleeves, plus diamond drop earrings and a low, polished chignon.
  • Her look included new patent platform sandals from the Martinelli × Redondo collaboration and the red-and-gold sash of Germany’s Order of Merit, with a jewelry expert highlighting the tiara’s restrained, heritage-signaling elegance.
