Quebec’s Anti-Planned-Obsolescence Law Takes Effect With New Repair Disclosure Rules

The rules require reasonably priced spare parts that consumers can install with common tools.

Overview

  • Quebec’s durability and right-to-repair provisions came into force on Oct. 5, 2025, moving requirements from legislation to day-to-day obligations for sellers and manufacturers.
  • Retailers are now barred from selling goods whose normal operating life has been deliberately limited.
  • At the point of purchase, consumers must be told whether spare parts and the information needed to repair or maintain products are available.
  • Spare parts and repair services must be offered at reasonable prices, with components designed to be installed using commonly available tools and with consumers able to choose their repairer.
  • Merchants and manufacturers that fail to comply face fines, and federal departments previously consulted on similar measures as other provinces consider adopting them.
