Overview
- A 44-year-old man from Quebec was pronounced dead at a hospital after being caught in a rip current off Ormond Beach on Dec. 26.
- Lifeguards were dispatched at about 12:17 p.m. and found three people in the water, with the victim located face-down roughly 150 yards offshore.
- CPR began once the man was brought to shore and continued during transport over soft sand to the nearest beach ramp.
- The patient was transferred to Ormond Beach Fire and Volusia County EMS for emergency transport to a local hospital.
- The Volusia Watermen's Association reported minimal staffing with the nearest open lifeguard tower more than 1.5 miles away and urged beachgoers to swim near lifeguards.
