Overview

  • Environment Canada lifted air quality alerts for most parts of Quebec and Ontario on Sunday after wind shifts and scattered rain reduced haze.
  • Special air quality statements remain in effect for communities east of Montreal, south of Quebec City and parts of northern Ontario near the Manitoba border.
  • Meteorologists say the system will move through northern Saskatchewan into Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, bringing showers and winds to help disperse smoke.
  • The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reports 217 active fires across Canada, 94 of which are out of control, fueling haze over six provinces and the Northwest Territories.
  • Smoke has crossed into the United States, prompting air quality alerts in Minnesota, New York, Maine and Vermont and warnings for vulnerable groups to limit outdoor activity.
