Overview
- Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the higher-tier 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 at its Snapdragon Summit this week, positioning both as flagship mobile platforms.
- Both chips use TSMC 2nm process technology and Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU architecture with two Prime cores up to 5.0GHz and six performance cores up to 4.0GHz, plus support for LPDDR5X/LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0.
- The Extreme model adds a larger shared NPU memory pool to host 30B+ parameter Mixture-of-Experts models, Adreno matrix cores and Adreno Neural Fusion for AI-driven frame generation and upscaling, and pro video features including 8K at 60fps and APV codec support.
- Multiple Android OEMs have committed to the platforms and several phones are already tied to specific chips, with Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus and others naming flagship models that will use either the Gen 6 or the Extreme variant.
- Hands-on tests on Qualcomm reference units showed strong peak CPU/GPU scores but also notable device heating and rapid battery drain under sustained benchmarks, so independent reviews of final retail phones will be needed to confirm real-world sustained performance and battery life.
