Quake Swarm Up to Magnitude 6.3 Strikes Northwest Venezuela

Officials report no fatalities as civil protection teams inspect damage across Zulia.

  • Funvisis and the USGS documented roughly 10 main quakes and 21 aftershocks over about seven hours on the night of September 24–25.
  • At least two events exceeded magnitude 6, with estimates up to 6.3 at shallow depths near Mene Grande and Bachaquero along the Boconó fault system.
  • Shaking was felt across multiple Venezuelan states, including as far as Caracas, and in Colombian cities such as Bucaramanga, Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín.
  • Authorities reported no deaths; Zulia officials cited damage at Hospital Luis Razetti in Pueblo Nuevo and Hospital General del Sur in Maracaibo, the San Pedro bridge, and the Santa Bárbara church tower, along with power and traffic-signal failures.
  • President Nicolás Maduro mobilized civil protection, firefighters and the FANB for monitoring and assistance, with inspections of public buildings and oil-sector infrastructure ongoing.
