QS Asia Rankings 2026: University of Hong Kong Tops List as India Widens Presence but Loses Ground in Upper Ranks

QS links India’s rank drops to low citations-per-paper plus limited internationalisation despite gains in research output and faculty qualifications.

Overview

  • QS ranked a record 1,529 Asian institutions with 552 debut entries, as Mainland China reached 395 ranked universities and India rose to 294 after adding 137 first-timers.
  • The University of Hong Kong took first place, followed by Peking University, with Singapore’s NUS and NTU tied for third.
  • IIT Delhi remained India’s highest-ranked at 59th, down from 44th, with seven Indian institutions in the top 100 and none in the top 50 this year.
  • QS highlighted India’s strengths in research productivity and faculty credentials, noting leadership in papers per faculty and staff with PhDs, including MAKAUT ranked No. 1 regionally for productivity.
  • Weaker citations-per-paper scores (IIT Delhi 31.5, IIT Bombay 20.0, IIT Madras 20.3), low international student and faculty ratios, and faculty–student constraints were cited as key factors in relative declines, even as many Indian institutions improved their total scores.
