QIM Calls Off Shambhu Border March After Assurances From Home Ministry

Police sealed the PunjabHaryana crossing, diverting traffic during the ‘Dilli Chalo’ call.

Overview

  • Qaumi Insaaf Morcha leaders ended their sit-in at the Shambhu toll after a Union Home Ministry joint secretary pledged to forward their memorandum on Sikh prisoners to the Centre.
  • Haryana authorities blocked entry at the Ghaggar overbridge and imposed diversions, with the RajpuraAmbalaDelhi highway at Shambhu closed from 7 am to 6 pm.
  • Convoys from Punjab set out for the border in the morning, but police stopped the first tractor-trolley at Shambhu and directed it to the service road.
  • Organisers framed the two-day ‘Dilli Chalo’ action around the release of Sikh prisoners, justice for 2015 sacrilege and police-firing cases, and wider minority and intellectual-rights issues, timed with Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom anniversary.
  • QIM said the Mohali YPS Chowk sit-in that has been ongoing since January 2023 will continue even as the Shambhu action was withdrawn following the meeting with the central official.
