QatarEnergy Awards Samsung C&T 1.91 Trillion-Won Contract for Ras Laffan CO2 Capture Project

The facility underpins Qatar’s plan to use carbon capture to lower LNG emissions toward more than 11 million tons a year by 2035.

Overview

  • The EPC award covers a carbon compression and transport facility serving existing LNG plants at Ras Laffan Industrial City.
  • Captured CO2 will be compressed and dehydrated, then moved via an underground pipeline of about 20 kilometers to depleted gas fields for permanent storage.
  • The project is designed to capture up to 4.1 million tons of CO2 per year from Ras Laffan operations.
  • QatarEnergy frames the project as a key step in a wider CCS program following earlier initiatives begun in 2019.
  • Samsung C&T cited its track record on major Qatari projects in securing the deal and said it will expand into carbon compression and transport lines of business.
