Overview

  • FIFA announced on Thursday, October 22 that the final phase of the 2026 Copa Intercontinental will be played in Qatar from December 9 to December 16 and will consist of three matches: the Derby of the Americas, the Challenger Cup, and the final.
  • Under rules revised in 2024 the UEFA Champions League winner enters straight into the final, which means Paris Saint-Germain is already guaranteed a place in the December 16 title match.
  • Earlier qualifying rounds produced Mamelodi Sundowns as the Challenger Cup entrant after they eliminated Al-Ahli, and Toluca will meet the eventual Copa Libertadores champion in the Derby of the Americas on December 9 to decide the Challenger Cup opponent.
  • South America’s slot remains undecided because Palmeiras is waiting in the Libertadores final and the winner of Flamengo versus Estudiantes will determine who faces Palmeiras for the Libertadores title and the Intercontinental pathway.
  • FIFA has not yet named the specific Qatari stadiums for the three matches, a detail that leaves travel, ticketing and local logistics unresolved even as host, schedule and match order are now fixed.
